Hey, I’m Melanie. I am wife to Bill, mom to three hard-working teenagers, and have been teaching 4-7 year-old students to read for the last 10 years in K-2 classrooms. Reading God’s Word, the Bible, gives me hope and grounds me with peace in a world filled with chaos. As a beginning teacher, I taught kids to read using the wrong approach (old cueing system instead of phonics). Tired of teaching kids to guess what words they were reading by having them look at the beginning letter of a word and the accompanying picture, I knew there had to be a better way! Then, I discovered a sequential, step-by-step phonics-based approach to teaching kids to read. An instructional model that teaches kids to read simple to more complex texts, phonics skill, by phonics skill. An approach to teaching kids to read that I will forever use with beginning readers. Maybe you’re type A and you’ve already ordered your Kindergarten, Grade One or Grade Two Homeschool Language Curriculum for the year. Maybe you’ve been shying away from teaching long u vowel teams. Why are there so many different spellings for long u? When do I teach my child to spell long u this way? When do I teach my child to spell long u that way? You say to yourself, it’s too complicated, so I’ll teach them one way to spell long u, and hope for the best.
The thing is, your son or daughter will come across words with different long u spellings. So, it really is best to just rip off the band-aid and teach long u in all of its forms, so that your child can apply vowel team rules to read these words. It’s time to teach your child all the long u spellings, so that he or she can tackle reading these words head-on.
