Maybe you’ve been shying away from teaching long u vowel teams. Why are there so many different spellings for long u? When do I teach my child to spell long u this way? When do I teach my child to spell long u that way? You say to yourself, it’s too complicated, so I’ll teach them one way to spell long u, and hope for the best.
The thing is, your son or daughter will come across words with different long u spellings. So, it really is best to just rip off the band-aid and teach long u in all of its forms, so that your child can apply vowel team rules to read these words. It’s time to teach your child all the long u spellings, so that he or she can tackle reading these words head-on.
